New technology in communications and transportation has brought about transnational responsibilities and concerns, forcing governments to re-evaluate their roles. National systems, while still intact, have given way to international counterparts. Our areas of interest stem from the pervasive nature of globalization, which has precipitated the creation of international organizations like the UN, regional alliances like NATO, and global corporations like Nike. It is our belief that national security is now inextricably linked with transnational systems. Until the end of the Cold War, security depended on a single line that divided two enemies. Today, lines of trade and intelligence have crossed this once impenetrable barrier. Security is no longer an issue of reinforcing borders but relationships. In the Committee on International Security, we hope to spur new thinking in students who are already taking their places as citizens of the world. We are coming of age with the new international system, and although we understand its perils, we also imagine its promises. The Committee was formed to facilitate policy-relevant innovation and give it a voice. We hope to disagree because we now need the dissent we once feared.
